Benefits of a home gym

By UKSF on 12 November, 2021

For the past few years, the benefits of a home gym have been clearer than ever. More and more people are realising that you get just as good a workout at home (if not better). We at UKSF believe that a home gym can be the perfect replacement for your workout needs, and can even save you money in the long run.

Quality of workout

The biggest benefit of a home gym compared to public or commercial gyms is the potential quality of your workout. A public gym fundamentally has its floor space limited by how many people are using it on any given day, while your own gym is only limited by your own personal preference and home space.

In terms of personal enjoyment and development, a home gym is also ideal, as you can feel far more free and able to make as much noise as you want and put on any kind of music you want, (if you have a family or neighbours this may be an issue, but probably less than taking your own speakers to the gym). When it comes down to it, if it's your gym, it's your rules.

Time efficiency and convenience

On a practical level, having your own gym at your fingertips is incredibly useful, as you can avoid all of the hassles of going to the gym like using the changing rooms, walk/drive to and from, needing to remember all your gear in your gym bag and many more on top of all that. If all you need to do is roll out of bed and you’re at the gym, the sheer amount of time you will save will be extraordinary.

Being able to skip the queues to equipment is another added benefit that having your own home gym can afford, meaning you can do the exact workout you were planning on doing without losing any rhythm. This combination of saving time by not having to travel as well as the fact that you will be able to do exactly what you want and when you want using the equipment you have bought can significantly improve your workout efficiency.

Saving money

It may initially seem counterintuitive, as you will need to invest quite a bit of money when you first start setting up your home gym, but over the years having your own equipment will save you a significant amount due to not having to pay for membership fees and being able to maintain your own equipment.

Gym prices vary greatly depending on the quality and how much you are willing to spend. Some gyms can be as little as £10 a month, though these are often overcrowded and may have poorer quality of equipment. Overall while the initial cost could appear high, the benefits of a home gym outweigh these costs immediately, as well as the fact that over years you are inevitably going to save money due to the potentially high costs of gym memberships.

Privacy to learn

If you are a beginner it can be difficult to make that first plunge into a serious gym. Your assumption is that everyone is going to be looking at you and making fun of your bad form. The reality is that in most cases this couldn’t be further from the truth, as people in gyms are far too concerned with how they look to bother worrying about you. However, to many, the task of going into a gym with no experience is still too daunting. Working out from home and using your own equipment can be a great way to get in shape before going to a gym for the first time.

It should go without saying that if you do intend on working out from home initially and then spending some of your time at a gym you should concentrate on improving your form and getting the technique as perfect as you can. Learning from online videos and diagrams can be a great way to learn, or even hiring a personal trainer, which would also be ideal in a home gym as it is far easier to learn in a private training environment where you can better concentrate on the task at hand.

On top of all this, it is much easier to keep a private home gym clean and well maintained. Gyms due to their very nature have people touching virtually every surface conceivable and spreading germs inevitably. At your home gym, other than the fact that you are likely going to be the only one there, you can clean it to your own satisfaction and be sure that you are in a safe and stable environment where your only concern is your physical improvement.

Maintenance and warranty

If you are buying brand new quality gym equipment it will likely have the best warranty policy associated with it. If you instead buy second hand or used equipment, then there will likely be no warranty with it and you will not be able to replace or fix the item should it get broken, and second-hand weights that are being lifted regularly certainly are prone to breakages.

Additionally, if all the weights and equipment is your own property, you can maintain it to a higher standard than at a gym or if it were second hand. Maintaining weights is easier than gyms make it out to be, and will be far cheaper than having to buy replacements.
