Open Workout 26.2 Review: A Return to True CrossFit?
A Return to True CrossFit?
The second workout of the CrossFit Open has now been released, and the conversation around the Open has shifted quickly.
After the mixed reaction to 26.1, 26.2 feels much closer to what many athletes expect from a CrossFit workout a combination of conditioning, technical skill, and movement variety that rewards both fitness and efficiency.
In this blog we break down the workout, look at community reactions, and share tips to help you perform well.

What Is Open Workout 26.2 Testing?
Unlike the first week, 26.2 introduces a more balanced test of fitness.
The workout blends multiple elements that reflect traditional CrossFit programming:
-
Technical movement under fatigue
-
Aerobic capacity
-
Coordination and rhythm
-
Strategic pacing
This type of programming challenges athletes across several domains rather than relying purely on engine capacity.
Public Reaction to 26.2
Across gyms and online discussions, the response to 26.2 has been far more positive.
A More Complete Fitness Test
Many athletes feel the workout represents a more authentic CrossFit test. It combines different movement demands and forces competitors to think about efficiency rather than simply pushing through volume.
Athletes who thrive in technical environments are already seeing more opportunity to separate themselves from the field.

A Better Balance of Skill and Accessibility
While there are technical elements involved, the workout is still achievable for most Open athletes.
Scaled options and manageable loads mean beginners can still take part while experienced athletes can push the pace.
This balance is something the community often appreciates during the Open.
Strategy Matters
Another positive mentioned by many coaches is the strategic element.
This workout rewards athletes who plan ahead and understand their limits. Pacing, transitions and movement efficiency can make a significant difference to overall performance.
Our View at UKSF
In our opinion, 26.2 is a much better workout.
It feels far more aligned with what CrossFit was built around — combining different movements, testing multiple abilities, and rewarding athletes who have developed well-rounded fitness.
The workout is exciting to watch, enjoyable to perform, and still accessible to the majority of athletes entering the Open.
What we particularly like is the technical twist included in the workout. It introduces a skill component without making the workout exclusive or intimidating.
That’s exactly where the balance should be.
CrossFit has always been about versatility. Strength, skill, conditioning, coordination — all working together under fatigue.
26.2 delivers that balance much better than the previous week.

Tips and Tricks for Performing Well in 26.2
1. Don’t Rush the Opening Minutes
The excitement of a new workout often leads athletes to start too fast. Focus on establishing a steady rhythm early and avoid unnecessary spikes in heart rate.
2. Prioritise Movement Efficiency
Technical movements reward good mechanics.
Focus on:
-
Clean repetitions
-
Efficient transitions
-
Consistent pacing
Avoid sloppy reps that could lead to wasted energy or no-reps.
3. Break Sets Before Failure
Small, controlled breaks are often faster than pushing until failure.
Planning rep schemes in advance helps maintain movement quality throughout the workout.
4. Control Your Breathing
Technical movements become significantly harder when your breathing is out of control. Focus on relaxing your upper body and managing your breathing between transitions.
5. Stay Calm Under Fatigue
The final portion of the workout is where many athletes lose time. Remaining composed and sticking to your plan often leads to better results than trying to sprint the finish.

What This Means for the Rest of the Open
After a divisive first week, 26.2 feels like a strong step back toward traditional CrossFit programming.
If the remaining workouts continue to combine technical skill with conditioning, the Open will once again reward athletes who train across multiple domains.
And ultimately, that’s what CrossFit has always been about — being ready for anything.
Final Thoughts
Open workouts always generate debate, but that’s part of what makes the season exciting.
26.2 has brought energy back into the conversation. It’s a workout that tests fitness, rewards skill, and remains achievable for most athletes taking part.
For us, this is much closer to what the CrossFit Open should look like.
Now we wait to see what week three brings.
