How to Build a Rugby Strength & Conditioning Gym: Inside the Yatton RFC Installation

By Toby on 01 October, 2026

Inside Yattons Rugby Football Club

A well-designed rugby strength and conditioning gym needs to do far more than provide somewhere for players to lift weights. Modern rugby training combines strength, power, speed, conditioning, functional fitness and increasingly HYROX-style training methods.

When Yatton Rugby Football Club in North Somerset developed its new training ground, the club wanted a gym that could support the strength and conditioning requirements of its rugby players while also providing a high-quality fitness facility for the local community.

The result is a versatile rugby S&C gym combining a custom functional fitness rig, commercial strength equipment, cardio machines, 20mm rubber gym flooring and a custom-branded astro turf training track.

Here’s how we approached the project and some of the key considerations when designing a modern strength and conditioning facility for a rugby club.

What Equipment Does a Rugby Strength & Conditioning Gym Need?

Rugby places significant physical demands on players. Strength, power, acceleration, endurance and muscular resilience all play an important role, which means a rugby gym needs to accommodate several different styles of training.

For Yatton RFC, the requirement extended beyond traditional strength training. The club wanted to deliver rugby strength and conditioning sessions, strength classes, conditioning workouts, HYROX-style training and women’s group fitness classes.

Creating a facility capable of supporting all of these activities required a combination of:

Rather than filling the room with equipment, the challenge is selecting equipment that provides the greatest training versatility while preserving enough open floor space for athletes and group sessions.

A Custom Functional Fitness Rig at the Centre of the Gym

One of the main features of the Yatton RFC gym is its custom-made functional fitness rig.

For rugby clubs and team training environments, a large functional rig can provide several training stations within a relatively compact footprint. Athletes can perform strength and functional movements while coaches can programme multiple exercises around the same structure.

The Yatton RFC rig was specifically designed for the facility and incorporates built-in storage for dumbbells, bumper plates and kettlebells.

Integrating gym storage into the rig helped reduce the amount of separate storage equipment required around the room, keeping more floor space available for training.

We also incorporated custom Yatton RFC logo plates into the structure. Bespoke branding can make a significant difference to a club gym, transforming what could otherwise feel like a generic commercial facility into a training environment that belongs to the team.

Combining Free Weights With Cable Strength Training

Free weights remain an important component of a rugby strength and conditioning programme.

Yatton RFC's equipment package therefore included Olympic barbells, bumper plates, gym benches, dip stations, dumbbells and kettlebells.

However, a modern S&C facility can benefit from offering several forms of resistance training.

A B52 dual pulley power rack was included to provide both traditional rack-based strength exercises and adjustable cable resistance from a single training station.

This allows coaches and members to perform a much wider variety of upper-body, lower-body and accessory movements without requiring several individual cable machines.

The gym also features a selection of plate-loaded and pin-select strength machines, complementing the functional training and free-weight areas.

Why Rubber Gym Flooring Matters in a Rugby S&C Facility

Choosing the correct gym flooring is particularly important in strength and conditioning environments.

Heavy free weights, bumper plates, strength machines and repeated daily training place significantly greater demands on flooring than a conventional fitness studio.

For Yatton RFC, we installed 20mm membrane rubber gym flooring tiles throughout the main training space.

High-quality rubber gym flooring provides a durable surface for strength training while helping protect the subfloor and create a professional finish across the facility.

For rugby clubs considering a new gym, flooring should therefore be considered during the initial design process rather than as an afterthought once the equipment has been selected.

Custom Astro Turf for Sled Pushes and HYROX-Style Training

Sled training has become increasingly popular across strength and conditioning and functional fitness facilities.

Yatton RFC wanted a dedicated area that could be used for sled pushes, sled pulls, conditioning drills and HYROX-style workouts.

We supplied and installed a UK-made custom astro turf track featuring Yatton RFC branding.

The track provides a dedicated training surface while also creating a strong visual centrepiece within the gym.

For facilities offering functional fitness and conditioning, incorporating gym astro turf or sled turf into the initial floor plan can provide considerably more training versatility without occupying the space required by another large piece of gym equipment.

Cardio Equipment for Rugby Conditioning

Strength is only one part of rugby performance.

The facility also needed to accommodate conditioning and cardiovascular training, so the equipment package included Concept cardio machines and an Air Runner.

Combining cardio machines with the sled track and functional fitness areas gives coaches several options for programming conditioning sessions.

It also makes the facility more suitable for HYROX-style classes and community fitness sessions, increasing the ways in which the gym can be used outside dedicated rugby training periods.

Designing a Club Gym for Players and the Community

One of the most interesting elements of the Yatton RFC project was the requirement for the gym to serve two purposes.

First and foremost, it needed to operate as a serious strength and conditioning facility for rugby players.

When the teams were not using the facility, however, Yatton RFC wanted the gym to provide greater value to the local community through strength, conditioning, HYROX-style and women's group classes.

This influenced the entire gym design.

Rather than creating a facility dominated by specialist machines, the combination of functional fitness equipment, free weights, strength machines, cardio equipment and open training space allows coaches to adapt the gym for different sessions and ability levels.

For sports clubs investing in new facilities, this type of flexible design can dramatically increase how often the space can be used.

From Gym Design to Full Installation

Planning a commercial or club gym involves more than selecting individual pieces of equipment.

Flooring, equipment positioning, training zones, storage, athlete movement and installation all need to work together.

For Yatton RFC, the UKSF team managed the key elements of the full gym installation, including the rubber flooring, custom astro turf, bespoke functional fitness rig and assembly and positioning of the strength and cardio equipment.

The installation itself was completed in two days, leaving the club with a finished facility ready for training.

Managing these elements together also helps ensure that the flooring, equipment and training zones work as one facility rather than being planned independently.

The Finished Yatton RFC Strength & Conditioning Gym

The completed Yatton RFC gym demonstrates what can be achieved when rugby strength and conditioning requirements are considered alongside functional fitness and community use.

The facility now incorporates a bespoke functional rig with integrated storage, Olympic weightlifting equipment, a B52 dual pulley rack, plate-loaded and pin-select strength machines, commercial cardio equipment, 20mm rubber gym flooring and custom-branded astro turf.

For Yatton RFC, that means one facility can accommodate rugby S&C, strength training, Olympic lifting, conditioning, functional fitness, sled training, HYROX-style workouts and group fitness classes.

For other rugby clubs, sports teams and performance facilities considering a new gym, the project also demonstrates the importance of designing the complete space around how athletes and coaches will actually use it.
